Taking a look at Windows 7 - Part 2: Editions

Windows 7, Microsoft newest version of the Windows family, will be available in six different editions. The main two editions for users are Home Premium and Professional which will be available at retail. The other four editions are mainly focused for business use and the developing world. Like Microsoft products, each edition will include all the features and capabilities of the edition below it. Microsoft have announced that all editions for Windows 7 will be stored on the users PC and users who wish to upgrade to a more advanced edition of Windows 7 can do so using the Windows Anytime Upgrade allowing them to purchase the upgrade.

Editions

Windows 7 Starter
The most basic edition of Windows 7 and will be available pre-installed from computer manufacturers. Windows 7 Starter does have Windows Aero and will only be available in 32-bit.

Windows 7 Home Basic
Home Basic is aimed at the emerging markets such as Brazil, India, Mexico, Philippines and Thailand. Windows Aero is available in this edition but some of the features have been removed.

Windows 7 Home Premium
Windows 7 Home Premium is aimed at the home market and contains Windows Aero, Windows Media Center and also touch-screen controls.

Windows 7 Professional
Windows 7 Professional is aimed at small business users and also the enthusiast. Along with Windows Aero, Windows Media Center and touch-screen controls; this editions allows users to join a Windows Server domain, including additional features such as Remote Desktop Server, location aware printing, Encrypting File System, Presentation Mode and Windows XP Mode.

Windows 7 Enterprise
Windows 7 Enterprise is aimed at business users who have a Software Assurance contract with Microsoft. Windows 7 Enterprise has all the features in editions mentioned above, but also includes support for Multilingual User Interface, BitLocker Drive Encryption, UNIX application support.

Windows 7 Ultimate
Windows 7 Ultimate contains all the same features as the Enterprise edition but is aimed at home users. However unlike Windows Vista, Windows 7 Ultimate does not include extra features that are excusive to Windows 7 Ultimate.

Windows 7 E Edition
Microsoft planned to release Windows 7 in Europe without Internet Explorer in response to the European Union antitrust investigations. However, computer manufacturers negative reactions, Microsoft scrapped the E edition in July 2009.
